Chapter Nineteen

Anemone

I hand Jax a drink and pop the top on mine, then take a deep gulp before launching into a quick version of the events that have happened since I left Ontario. Jax interrupts me a few times to ask questions and, partway through, we move to the living room couch with more beer.

When I get to the part about Gunner, Jax stands up to pace around the room while I finish telling him about the attack and what’s happened since then.

Jax sits back down beside me. “Why didn’t you tell me any of this when it was happening? I could have come sooner.”

I snuggle against him, burying my face against his chest. “There wasn’t anything you could do. And besides, I wasn’t alone. I’ve got a great support system here. Real friends that care about me.”

He hugs me close. “I still would have liked to know, Nem. I never would have joined the Dragons if I’d known how rough they’d been with you.”

I sit back to gaze up at him. “Jax, I’m not mad at the club anymore. I understand why Dom did the things he did. His daughter was his priority and, as a parent, I get that. Please don’t say anything about Willow being my cousin. We haven’t told her yet.”

He’s just holds me closer. I’m sure his mind is going a thousand miles an hour with all that I’ve unloaded on him.

“And the attack wasn’t the Dragon’s fault,” I assure him. “I know it was all Gunner. Potter and Gabe were both there when they questioned him, and they wouldn’t lie to me. I trust them.”

Jax strokes a hand down my back. “I’m so sorry you had to go through that, Nem. I’m proud of you for picking up and carrying on after such a horrible occurrence.”

A tear runs down my cheek and I quickly wipe it away. “Thanks, Jax. That means a lot to me.”

“But they still don’t know who started the fire, right?”

“Nope. Gunner said it wasn’t him, and the guys all believed him. And I’m still getting crazy texts, apparently from this Cee-Cee woman who nobody knows. But enough about all that. Where are you staying?”

“At the Comfort Inn by the airport. They serve breakfast in the mornings and the rooms are clean. It’s good enough until I figure out somewhere permanent. I could stay at the clubhouse, but I don’t want to be around that many people all the time. I don’t know any of them that well yet.”

Nem sits up and says, “You are not staying at a crappy hotel when we have plenty of extra room here. It might not have been Cassie’s place to ask, but she was right. We’d love to have you.”

Jax raises his eyebrows and asks, “Don’t you have to check with Potter first?”

I feel my brow furrow in annoyance. “Fuck no I don’t. It’s my house.” He’s thinking of the old me who let Stuart make all the decisions. Guess he’ll find out soon enough that woman doesn’t exist anymore.
